A Phlebotomy Technician collects specimens, such as blood, urine, stool, or other samples, which are used for testing, transfusions, research, or donation. They instruct patients on procedures for proper collection and ensure that the sample is acceptable and clearly labeled in its container. Phlebotomy technicians must keep their work area and instruments clean and sanitary to avoid causing infections or other complications. Some phlebotomy technicians also ship or transport blood or other samples to different locations.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the forecasted growth demand for Phlebotomy Technicians between now and 2031 is 8%. About 19,600 openings are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.
Annual salaries range widely from $30K-$52k. Hourly pay typically ranges from $18 to $20, depending on experience. Plus, the role often comes with full-time benefits like health insurance, paid time off, and retirement plans.
Phlebotomy technicians can be found working in hospitals and clinics, diagnostic laboratories, physician's offices, and blood donation centers.
